Artist's Statement
I am inspired by the colors and infinite patterns in nature and by the textures and designs which can be created using letters and calligraphy. The letters and words are never intended to be read. There are no hidden messages. I would like to weave all the elements into one unified composition. There is a quote from William Morris (1834-1896) which says, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Art may not always be useful, but I try to create something I believe to be beautiful.
Currently I am working with monoprints, each of which is unique. Although I am using an etching press and oil-based etching inks, the plastic plates are not cut or etched. The prints are constructed rather than painted, and there can be many different layers, some incorporating collage, which add depth and complexity to the final design. The early layers may be barely recognized in the final print.
